Easter Monday Commemoration
At the Irish Monument
Nassau County Court House
Court House Drive, Mineola, N.Y.
12:00 Noon, April 17, 2006

This past April 17, 2006, The Friendly Sons hosted the annual Easter Monday Commemoration of the 90th Anniversary of the Rising and Proclamation of the Republic of Ireland. In cooperation with other Irish Organizations, the Society remembers and honors the brave men and women who fought to bring freedom and justice in a united Ireland.

The monument, in the face of the County Court House, in the shade of cherry blossom trees and surrounded by roses, reads as follows:

EASTER MONDAY- APRIL 16, 1979
THIS GROVE, LOCATED IN THE SHADOW OF THE COURTS OF JUSTICE, IS A LIVING SYMBOL OR OUR DETERMINATION TO END BIGOTRY AND DISCRIMINATION IN NORTHERN IRELAND AND TO SUPPORT EFFORTS TO ACHEIVE PEACE WITH JUSTICE IN A UNITED IRELAND

THE ROSE TREE
'O WORDS are lightly spoken,
Said Pearse to Connolly,
'Maybe a breath of politic words
Has withered our Rose Tree;
Or maybe but a wind that blows
Across the bitter sea.'

'It needs to be but watered,'
James Connolly replied,
'To make the green come out again
And spread on every side,
And shake the blossom from the bud
To be the garden's pride.'

'But where can we draw water,'
Said Pearse to Connolly,
'When all the wells are parched away?
O plain as plain can be
There's nothing but our own red blood
Can make a right Rose Tree.'
